Addictions can be very difficult to overcome. In Canada alone, countless people and their families suffer from drug and alcohol addiction. At HealthMedica we use a comprehensive treatment program designed to help you defeat cravings, detoxify your body. With our Drug & Alcohol Addiction program, you will experience an easier and less painful withdrawal process resulting in a reduced chance of relapse.
Addiction is when any activity, object, behavior, or substance becomes the major focal point to a person.
Addiction can be physical, psychological, or both. Non-substance related addiction for example: gambling, running, swimming, and even sex, the addiction can actually change the brain’s chemistry with beta-endorphins. These endorphins will give the person an actual physical “high” or a “rush of adrenaline” when doing the act.
Drug and alcohol addiction have measurable physical effects; these two types of addictions are believed to produce a similar effect within the brain. This makes a person crave the substance or activity that causes sensation.
Risk factors for various addictions include:
People use drugs and alcohol because the substance stimulates the brain in ways that “feel good.” This immediate rewarding experience makes people want to repeat it. All substances with addictive potential stimulate the release of endorphins, a chemical in the brain that is associated with extreme relaxation. Substance use, however, brings a flood of endorphin, which changes the chemistry of the brain. The brain, tries to keep things balance by creating a tolerance, which means that more and more of the drug is needed to achieve the feeling of pleasure.
Withdrawal is a physiological process of overcoming addiction to substances.
Drug such as heroin or other narcotics, barbiturates, or amphetamines These substances have a similar chemical structure to that of endorphins. When an addict uses his or her drug of choice, the substances in the drug blocks nerve receptors in the brain. These receptors are normally used by natural occurring endorphins. If the drug is administered repeatedly, endorphin production in the body drops.
The addiction becomes physically painful when the substance is absent. Without the substance or the natural occurring endorphins, an addict’s damaged pain receptors no longer regulate the signals in the brain. The lack of stimulation causes acute pain, along with other extreme reactions for example: sweating, vomiting, unmanageable diarrhea, and severe depression. This reaction is not deadly, although it may feel like it. The addict often relapses just to stop the agony.
Without treatment, it takes approximately two to three weeks of anguish before the body’s natural endorphin production resumes and the pleasure-pain equilibrium returns to normal
STAYING OFF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL WILL DEPEND ON YOUR DETERMINATION AND SUPPORT SYSTEM.
By treating drug and alcohol using Laser Therapy, we relieve the physical effects of withdrawal by replacing the addictive substance with the laser’s stimulus.
The Laser light is used on designated acuepoints (hands, face, nose, feet, and ears) to stimulate a system endorphin release (takes approximately 60 mins). These chemicals are necessary to maintain a feeling of well-being, decrease stress, and ultimately reduce the need for what an addiction helps to supply.
If the stimulation of endorphins is consistent, cravings and addiction can be eliminated. RPM Laser Therapy approaches the physical aspect by using the laser as a first step to recovery.
This will make detox and withdrawals feel easier, less freighting, and less painful. Also during this phase of treatment vitamins and supplements are used to help by correcting internal body imbalances, which is a circuital step to a successful treatment.
Secondly the psychological effects and the underlying reasons for the addiction are due to a person’s personal issues. Long-term healthy coping mechanisms will be taught to ensure success.
